Blue Sky Lofts Gets Approval
City Council to vote on October 5th
The area around Scottsdale Fashion Square may soon become a lot busier. City planners this week approved a scaled-back proposal submitted by the Gray Development Group for the new, luxury Blue Sky lofts.
The plans for the complex call for five buildings and a wealth of public space. Just shy of 80,000 square feet, over 43% of the project will be made available to the public as a gathering spot and potentially a future candidate to host social events.
Located just east of Scottsdale Fashion Square mall next to the Scottsdale Riverwalk, the luxury Blue Sky lofts are a part of the new wave of urban residency expected to continue to pop up in major cities like the Phoenix-area. The apartment complex calls for 867 units within the five buildings. Per city ordinances, the buildings will not exceed 133 feet in height.
The project met some resistance from locals because of its quick ascendance through the approval process, forcing Gray COO Brian Kearny and his group to reduce the scale of the project a bit, lowering its projected building height by 15 feet and reducing the overall footprint by 329 apartments. The group was once projecting as many as 1,196 units.
The Blue Sky apartments will ultimately provide a Scottsdale town home experience, complete with an in-house health club and fitness center, in a great location. Supporters of the project hope it will continue to stimulate positive growth in the greater Phoenix-Scottsdale area.
In an effort to contribute to the Scottsdale community, the Gray Development Group also pledged to support the local arts to the tune of $250,000 and the group committed to donating $50,000 dollars each year, for the next 15 years, toward local housing initiatives centered on providing affordable housing for city service employees such as fire and police men and women.
Scottsdale City Council will meet on October 5th and will have final say on the approval of the project.
