Started as a massive ranch in 1891, the city of Chandler, Arizona by 1913 had established itself as somewhat prosperous town. It weathered the Great Depression, but did suffer from a cotton crash shortly afterward. Things turned around during WWII, with the establishment of Williams Air Force Base. By the 1950s the town was still somewhat limited in size, but the growth of Phoenix and the surrounding metropolitan areas led to the development of the agricultural region into various bedroom communities - of which Chandler is one.
Interestingly enough, the city's economy was based for a significant period of time on the ostrich farms that filled the area. These supplied feathers for women's hats, but the demand dwindled with the introduction of the automobile (and the effects of rushing wind on feathered head gear). Though the industry no longer exists in the city, there is an annual Ostrich Festival which brings thousands of visitors to the city.
The Chandler Parks Division was recognized for its massive efforts to protect the 250 native trees of the area, and the Chandler's Community Services Department was the recipient of three Arizona Parks and Recreation Association awards in 2009. The Hamilton Aquatic Center was also acknowledged as one of the Best Kids Water Parks by the Arizona Republic Reader's Choice Awards.
