O’Donoghues Pub is out and Tavern Americana is in at Grayhawk in north Scottsdale. The former Irish bar was gutted and renovated into a concept of mainstream American favorites and craft beers, with an emphasis on value.
The project comes from Urban Tavern Group (founders Tom Kelly and Brian Pierce also own TK’s Urban Tavern at Scottsdale Quarter).
At the heart of Americana are pizzas and beer, but contemporary style, as in wood-fired pies ($10.95 to $13.95), 24 boutique beers on tap ($2.50 to $6.50), and wines ($6 to $12 a glass) served in a private lounge with a glass-enclosed wine cellar.
The goal, Kelly said, is to provide a neighborhood gathering spot that, while offering alcohol, is family-friendly.
Spanning 6,000 square feet, Tavern Americana features a variety of dining areas, a 25-foot-long bar and covered patio accessed by retractable window pane garage doors, plus a private children’s area with three flat-screen televisions and an Xbox.
As with TK’s Urban Tavern, Americana’s kitchen is under the direction of chef Patrick Fegan. Appetizers ($5.95 to $9.95) include green chile pork; and chipotle shrimp with creamed leeks, pearl onions and bacon. Entrees ($9.95 to $23.95) include grilled burgers or Mexico City tacos; and a children’s menu features entrée plus a choice of salad or fries and a scoop of vanilla ice cream for $6.95.
