Scottsdale Ranch vs. Stonegate: Which Scottsdale Community Is Right for You?
Scottsdale Ranch and Stonegate sit close together in central-east Scottsdale, and buyers often look at both when they want an established neighborhood with real amenities and quick access to the 101. They’re a few miles apart, but they’re built for slightly different buyers.
Scottsdale Ranch is the larger master-planned community. It’s built around Lake Serena, a 42-acre lake with about five miles of shoreline, and it covers roughly 4,000 homes across dozens of subdivisions in the 85258 area. Homes range from small condos and townhomes to large custom lakefront estates, so the price spread is wide. Stonegate is smaller and guard-gated, off Via Linda in 85259. It runs about 900 homes on roughly 400 acres, with a single community center, pools, tennis, and pickleball behind a ccrewed gate.
The right choice usually comes down to budget, home style, whether you want a guarded entry, and how much community space you actually use. If a lake and lots of subdivision variety matter, look hard at Scottsdale Ranch. If you want a smaller, gated feel with one central amenity hub, Stonegate fits better.

Which Community Has Better Golf?
Neither Scottsdale Ranch nor Stonegate is a golf community, so if playing from your driveway is the goal, neither one delivers that. Both sit close to golf, though. McCormick Ranch Golf Club is a well-known daily-fee option near Scottsdale Ranch, and the Stonegate area is close to private clubs like Ancala Country Club and daily-fee play at the Sanctuary course near WestWorld. Club memberships at the private courses are separate from owning a home in either community.
Which Has Better Amenities?
Scottsdale Ranch leans on Lake Serena and its tennis and racquet club. Residents can get out on the water with pontoon boats, kayaks, paddleboats, and fishing, and the tennis center runs a large bank of lighted courts. Stonegate concentrates everything at one community center: pools, a spa, tennis, pickleball, a basketball court, a playground, and walking paths, plus a few small community lakes for looks rather than boating. Both are minutes from Shea Boulevard shopping and dining. If you want water recreation and more court options, Scottsdale Ranch has the edge. If you’d rather have one well-kept hub behind a gate, Stonegate is simpler.
Gated Options & Privacy
Scottsdale Ranch is a mix. Some of its subdivisions sit behind their own gates and some don’t, so you can choose your level of privacy depending on which neighborhood you buy in. Stonegate is guard-gated across the whole community, with a staffed entry controlling access, which is the bigger draw for buyers who want that added layer.
Who Each Community Is Best For
Scottsdale Ranch is best for buyers who want choice: a wide price range, a real lake, tennis, and everything from a starter condo to a custom waterfront home, all inside one community.
Stonegate is best for buyers who want a smaller, guard-gated neighborhood with a single central amenity center and a more consistent, established home stock.
