Sereno Canyon vs. Windgate Ranch: Which Scottsdale Community Is Right for You?
Sereno Canyon and Windgate Ranch are both newer, guard-gated communities in North Scottsdale, both built by Toll Brothers, and both sit close to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. That’s why buyers put them side by side. But they’re not the same, and the differences matter.
Windgate Ranch is the more established of the two. It’s off Thompson Peak Parkway near DC Ranch, built out between 2006 and 2017, with about 700 semi-custom Spanish-style homes and a big central clubhouse. Sereno Canyon is newer and farther northeast, off Rio Verde Drive near 136th Street, still selling new construction from Toll Brothers, with a mix of cottages, villas, and large estates on bigger lots.
Neither is a golf community, so if golf is your top priority, look elsewhere and plan to join a club nearby. The right choice here usually comes down to budget, home style, lot size, how much community amenity programming you want, and whether you’d rather buy resale or build new.

Which Community Has Better Golf?
Neither one is a golf community, so let’s be clear about that up front. There are no courses inside Sereno Canyon or Windgate Ranch. Both are close to plenty of North Scottsdale golf, though, so members typically join a nearby club. Windgate Ranch sits next to DC Ranch, which has private golf, and both communities are a reasonable drive from the many public and private courses across 85255 and 85262. If golf is central to your plans, buy in one of these for the home and location, then choose a club membership separately.
Which Has Better Amenities?
Windgate Ranch has the deeper amenity package of the two. Its 10,000-square-foot clubhouse anchors three pools and hot tubs, plus tennis, pickleball, basketball, sand volleyball, and walking trails through the community. Sereno Canyon centers on the Mountain House Lodge, with a fitness center, spa, two heated pools, a cafe, and cabanas, and it leans harder on direct access to preserve trailheads like Tom’s Thumb. If you want courts and a busy community-center feel, Windgate Ranch wins. If you want a lodge-style wellness setup and trails out your door, Sereno Canyon fits.
Gated Options & Privacy
Both communities are guarded, not just gated. Windgate Ranch has 24-hour gated security at a single controlled entry, which gives the whole community one consistent layer of privacy. Sereno Canyon is also staff/guard-gated, with its estate homesites averaging around 2.5 acres, so the larger lots add privacy on top of the gate. Between the two, Sereno Canyon’s bigger parcels generally mean more space between neighbors.
Who Each Community Is Best For
Sereno Canyon is best for buyers who want to build or buy new, want a bigger lot with room around the house, and like having a range of home sizes from smaller lock-up cottages to large estates.
Windgate Ranch is best for buyers who want a move-in-ready resale home in an established, family-friendly community with a full slate of courts, pools, and a large clubhouse.
