Talk about attention-getters.

It’s impossible to miss a master planned community when it is 1,100 acres and it’s located smack dab in the middle of Scottsdale. Oh, and smack dab in the middle of that is a 42-acre private lake.

That’s Scottsdale Ranch.

But you’ve probably heard of it, driven through it and shopped near it.

Where it’s at: Scottsdale Ranch is bordered by Shea Boulevard to the north, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the south, 96th Street to the west and as far as 112th Street to the east.

Three cool things about the neighborhood:

Lake Serena. Kayaks, canoes and fishing. Executive Director Kathe Barnes said residents of Scottsdale Ranch have access to their own personal lake. If you are of the nautical breed, this community is for you. The centerpiece of Scottsdale Ranch is Lake Serena. She said the eco-friendly, private body of water features more than 5 miles of shoreline. Anglers can have their fair share of Lake Serena as well. Barnes said residents who love to fish can always rely on the lake to be fully stocked with bass, catfish, blue gill, white amur, carpe and croppie.

Holiday Social & Boat Light Parade. This has become a signature event in the nearly 20 years it has been in existence. Each holiday season, resident-decorated pontoon boats form a parade that lights up Lake Serena, while onlookers partake in complimentary desserts, wine, beer, hot cider and coffee. Even Santa Claus shows up for photos with the kids. Residents vote for the best-decorated boats, and prizes are awarded to the top three.

Location. Scottsdale Ranch is within miles of a number things to do in the city. Nat Handler, president of marketing firm Vendara Group LLC, has lived in Scottsdale Ranch on and off for the past 10 years. He said he lives next to pretty much anything he could want, including restaurants, shopping, entertainment and culture, including the Musical Instrument Museum and Butterfly Wonderland. There are also community programs available nearby at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Virginia G. Piper Branch and Via Linda Senior Center, as well as public recreation at the Scottsdale Ranch Park and Tennis Center. “It’s very centrally located to parts of the Valley that appeal to me,” Handler said. “Everything is at my fingertips. There’s no need to venture out once I get home.”
