AZ Central – 3 cool things about your Scottsdale neighborhood – McCormick Ranch

McCormick Ranch

Built from 1972 through the 1990s, this upscale neighborhood in central Scottsdale is considered to be the city’s first master-planned community.

Where it’s at: Generally, the boundaries run from Shea Boulevard south to Indian Bend Road, and from Pima Road west to Scottsdale Road.

McCormick Ranch actually is made up of more than 60 subdivisions, as well as the McCormick Ranch Center, a mixed-use development with condominiums east of Pima Road, according to the McCormick Ranch Property Owners Association.

Nearly 27,000 residents live in 8,900 houses, apartments and condominiums on 3,100 acres, which is nearly 5 square miles.

Three cool things about the neighborhood:

Who lives there. The community is or has been home to several notable residents, including former Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross, state Historian Marshall Trimble and actor David Spade, according to Alexandra Duemer, founder and editor of McCormick Ranch Lifestyle magazine.
Its proximity to amenities. The neighborhood is surrounded by lakes, parks, resorts, eight shopping centers, golf courses and, of course, the popular bike paths that connect to the Indian Bend Wash greenbelt.

Its name, which comes from Fowler and Anne McCormick, who bought the 160-acre working ranch in 1944 and expanded it over the years. Fowler was the grandson of John D. Rockefeller. Anne McCormick, a lover of Arabian horses, died in 1969 and the ranch was sold to Kaiser-Aetna. The McCormicks also donated 100 acres of land to Scottsdale, of which 30 acres became the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park (above). Guy Stillman, Anne’s son, drove the creation of the park at Indian Bend and Scottsdale roads.
